Linoleum swollen what to do

Linoleum is the most common budget option for finishing the floor, which is often used in the repair of premises of any type. It is well suited to different styles and colors, has many advantages over other flooring, but requires proper installation. Otherwise, already during operation a situation may arise when the material is swollen, and the person does not know what to do with it.

Linoleum swollen what to do with it

Many people are attracted by the flooring because of their low cost, texture and various color schemes. It is easy to install and further care. But this does not guarantee the absence of problems with it. If the flooring is improperly used or there were disturbances during installation, linoleum can form unpleasant blisters that are difficult to remove.

A similar situation may occur under force majeure circumstances, if the coating was poorly fixed initially. The main thing when choosing linoleum as a material for finishing a room is to study its features and learn in advance information on how to cope with such problems.

The reasons

There are several main reasons due to which bubbles may form on the surface:

  • force majeure (floods, earthquakes, gulf neighbors or other similar problems lead to damage to the flooring);
  • negligent attitude during installation (violation of clearly regulated laying technology often leads to similar problems);
  • lack of proper preparation (if the surface of the subfloor was not sufficiently leveled and subsequently rolled material was laid on it, linoleum will repeat all the existing irregularities).

In addition, the quality of the material itself, insufficient or excessive use of the adhesive composition, the wrong choice of glue for a particular type of linoleum and sudden temperature changes can affect the quality of the finishing coating. All this will undoubtedly affect the evenness of linoleum, laid in the room.

Important! Before laying linoleum should carefully examine the basic rules of installation, as well as select quality materials. Including glue to cover.

Ways to eliminate bloating

If the linoleum is not glued to the floor, but simply laid on the surface of the draft, care should be taken to heat the swollen piece. To do this, you can use a rubber heating pad, which is pre-poured hot water. It is placed on the place of swelling and allow the place to warm up a little before they start leveling the sheets of material.

Instead of a heating pad, if one is not at hand, you can use a heated iron. But you can not use it directly, you can lay the place of swelling with paper or foil, through which the impact of the appliance will be carried out.

The heating

It is possible to use heating even in the case with glued linoleum cloth using similar devices. However, this is a very time consuming and lengthy process that will require a fair amount of patience.

It is necessary to pierce the resulting swelling and heat the surface of the linoleum to such a state as to subsequently stretch the resulting bubble, without spoiling the coating in other places. After heating, the bubble will become pliable and quickly extrude from under the floor covering.

Important! For better fixation, a glue composition is introduced into the puncture and the cargo is placed at the place where the material is ejected. The cargo is kept for two days.

Piercing glue

For blistering a small area, you can use a puncture. To do this, you need to have a sharp awl and adhesive composition, which will be glued lagging linoleum. Puncture the bubble, remove air from it, and then glue is injected with a syringe. After that, it will only be necessary to put plywood in place of bulging and install the load. A weight or sandbag can be used as a heavy object.

Notches

If bloating is of impressive diameter, apply the incision method. With a sharp knife in linoleum, make one or two (crosswise) incisions and release all the excess air from under the cover. A small amount of glue is distributed around the edges of the notch and a weight is placed on it for complete gluing to the subfloor.

Other improvised means

As a heating element with small bubbles in size, you can use heated table salt. It is heated in a pan, and then placed in a thick canvas bag and put on the place of swelling. It is also recommended to install the load and wait for the leveling surface.

If the amount of blistering is too large and it is impossible to eliminate them by usual methods, you will have to completely dismantle the linoleum, remove all the glue and mastics, allow the material to lie down and proceed to a new installation.

What blisters can not be removed, why?

It will not be possible to fix some flaws, even with the use of such tricks, if initially the installation and preparation were carried out incorrectly:

  • in case of insufficient alignment of the rough coating (if the surface of the sub floor is uneven, bubbles will form again and again, requiring constant repair);
  • when moisture gets on the substrate (in this case, before repairing the web, it is necessary to dry out not only the laid linoleum, but also the substrate, this may require a professional tool);
  • if the material is of poor quality (purchase of defective or low quality linoleum can result in similar problems, in this case it is better to contact the supplier and exchange the goods).

Repair linoleum, swollen after installation is quite simple, but it is recommended to do it very carefully, so as not to damage the surface. Still, it is better to initially comply with the installation technology so as not to experience similar problems in the future.
